“We’d be foolish not to use our imaginations, not to investigate every possible fact.”- Scientist
Montreal, September 2010 –Uncalled For is infinitely pleased to present their first dramatic work, the Governor General award-winning Possible Worlds, written by Canadian playwright John Mighton and directed by Liz Valdez. Possible Worlds runs from October 13-24 at MainLine Theatre.
Possible Worlds is a sci-fi love story, a philosophical murder mystery, a tragedy stretched across multiple universes. At its heart is an emotional, intelligent romance that will keep you questioning reality long after the lights come up.
What is imagination and how does the brain work? Should we ethically and morally allow certain scientific advancements? And at the core of it all, what is the soul?
For director Liz Valdez, science versus faith is one of the ideas that draws her to the piece, “People have always been looking, waiting for something. Science keeps moving forward. Religion keeps its stronghold, yet where is the spirituality in the way we live. If science takes over, where is the possibility for imagination, and is there room for the spirit and soul?” But ultimately for Valdez, this is a love story; “I want it to be a love story about the human spirit and the soul that searches in every world for its mate.”
For the founding members of Uncalled For (Matt Goldberg, Mike Hughes, Dan Jeannotte and Anders Yates), the themes of Possible Worlds key in to everything they have been exploring recently in terms of sketch comedy- but done seriously this time. For Anders Yates, “this piece has the sci-fi elements of past Uncalled For show Today Is All Your Birthdays as well as the dreamy surreal elements of Hypnogogic Logic.” Matt Goldberg agrees, “I really feel this is the perfect play for us to explore. With John Mighton's fascination of the possible and the world created by the mind, I can't think of a more suitable first production.”
“Heaven is very strange. I’d go there again, but I’d pack differently.”- George
Featuring Matt Goldberg as Williams, Eric Hausknost as Berkley, Heidi Hawkins as Joyce, Dan Jeannotte as George and Anders Yates as the scientist. Set and costume design by Lara Kaluza, lighting by David-Alexandre Chabot and sound by Ted Stafford. The stage manager is Paul Brian Imperial and Jacynthe Lalonde is the production manager.
This is an exciting departure for Uncalled For, a multi-award winning improv and sketch comedy troupe with a highly recognized name in Montreal and other major Canadian cities. They are looking forward to introducing new and returning audiences to another side of the company.
